The Roman Gladiator
A Gladiator (Latin: gladiator, "swordsman", from gladius, "sword") was an armed combatant who entertained audiences in the Roman Republic and Roman Empire in violent confrontations with other gladiators, wild animals, and condemned criminals. Some gladiators were volunteers who risked their legal and social standing and their lives by appearing in the arena.
The origins of Gladiator Weapons introduced in these combats were not of only Romans design, but also gathered from the nations that they conquered. The Roman crowd of spectators in the Coliseum enjoyed being reminded of Roman conquests and loved any gladiatorial fights that provided some sort of novelty. There were therefore approximately 30 different types of gladiator who specialized in using specific weapons, armor and shields.
